One of our Graduate Engineers, John Campbell describes his experience working as a grad at Lumen.
I’m structural engineer in the Civil & Structural team at Lumen. I specialise in designing, analysing, and implementing structural solutions for various projects, working closely with architects, contractors, and clients to meet safety, performance, New Zealand Standards. At university I studied a Bachelor of Engineering with a major in Construction Engineering. I was attracted to Lumen due to its wide range of structural engineering services, which matched my interest in terms of wanting a variety of work.
How would you describe the onboarding experience?
The onboarding experience was positive. Even though it was quite full-on at the start, my excitement about starting the job made it enjoyable. I appreciated that everyone was willing to explain things despite their busy schedules. The training has been invaluable, providing a balance between guidance and independence.
What are some of your day to day tasks & responsibilities?
What I enjoy most about my workday is the variety of projects I work on. Whether it’s earthquake repairs, earthquake strengthening, commercial/industrial design like the Woolshed project I’ve been working on recently, or the structural design of complex residential homes, each project offers something unique. I also appreciate that some of my time is spent outside the office doing construction monitoring for the projects I’m working on. Recently, I’ve been fortunate enough to work on projects that even required helicopter site visits!
What was it like transitioning from university to full time work?
I’ve benefited from the transition of university life, particularly the structure and routine that working at Lumen provides. The company supports a good work-life balance while still emphasising career development and personal growth. I notice this because I feel less stressed at work than I did at university.
How would you describe Lumen's company culture?
The company culture at Lumen is the best I’ve experienced so far in my career. I’ve had the opportunity to do things I would have never done on my own. One of them being hot air ballooning, that was pretty insane. Pizza making and a golf trip were my other highlights. Another cool part about working here is everyone is very approachable which is nice if you’ve moved from outside of Christchurch.
