Coal Boiler Replacement Feasibility Study

Purpose:

Alsco New Zealand wanted to investigate options to replace the existing 4.8MW coal boiler at their Christchurch Laundry site with a low carbon alternative.

Project:

Lumen conducted a boiler replacement feasibility study to identify and prioritise the most efficient boiler replacement options for the existing coal-fired boiler. We investigated several replacement options and identified opportunities for demand reduction to minimise the size of the replacement boiler, and hence the required capital cost. We also supported Alsco NZ with a government funding application for the replacement.

Results:

Following the successful government funding application for $1.07m, Alsco NZ replaced their existing 4.8MW coal boiler with a 3MW biomass boiler which is expected to start operation by late 2024. The project is expected to prevent the discharge of over 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions per year, a significant saving.
